There are great insights here. It's not about coding, as such, but about the realities of OOD, the tools, and the assumptions made, good and bad, by all members of a team. Some places are reluctant to invest in tools, though the tools are never more than a fraction of the real costs of those who use them. Why would you not equip your developers with the most productive tools? And keep them updated?Software products are ever more complex with each year that passes. The complexity of development, and of managing development are similarly complex and challenging. This book should be required reading in any software publishing company.
I can't believe it but it's true. Even after 30 years the same mistakes are happening again and again. As I read this book I could see all the errors happening in my current line of work and I mean we should be made more aware of these silly thing our bosses do or even our colleagues.This book should be mandatory to any college student who is persuing an education in any software development area going to programmer, analyst or even a manager or the QA. This is the bible not for programming but to understand pitfalls and our mistaken ways of doing things to fast.This was brilliant 30 years and it is still now, I appreciate everybody who collaborated in this book because I learned a lot and made myself a better coder for it.Thanks and I hope you have other great master piece like this one :)
Despite its title, not much in this 250-page book is actually about object-oriented technology. If you substituted "client-server" or just "large systems" for "object oriented" most of the content would still apply.Despite its lack of specific O.O. guidance, the advice Webster gives us is sound. Project managers and others responsible for important software development projects, object-oriented or not, should read and reread it.The style is friendly and readable. The book ends with a good bibliography of both project-management and object-oriented analysis topics.
I was a little surprised at the sparsity of this book. In general, each set of two pages takes up 1 1/2 pages of actual text. However, the ideas are valuable, and as far as I'm concerned the chapter on political pitfalls by itself justified the purchase price. I would recommend browsing through it in the bookstore first, then making your purchasing decision.
We still recommend this book to our clients. Everyone talks about Object-oriented programming as though it were some sort of "silver bullet," but OO programming is still just a tool - it can be used or misused at the risk of your project's success.
